On the outskirts of Semarang, Ali (13) and his younger sister Zahra (9) live in poverty with their parents, Karim and Fatimah. One day, Zahra’s only pair of shoes goes missing after Ali accidentally leaves them at a grocery store. Afraid of being scolded by their parents, Ali and Zahra agree to take turns wearing Ali’s worn-out shoes: Zahra wears them to school in the morning, and Ali wears them in the afternoon. From then on, their daily lives are filled with shame, panic, and attempts to hide their little secret.One day, Zahra sees Gendis (8) wearing her lost shoes, but she decides against asking for the shoes back after learning that Gendis’s family is poorer than hers. Meanwhile, Ali grows increasingly burdened with guilt and wants to atone for his mistake. When his school holds a running competition with the prize of running shoes for third place, Ali is determined to join to win the new shoes for Zahra. He trains hard and promises his younger sister that he will win.
